Winter Warmers

It’s winter now and you’ll need a coat to keep you warm throughout the sleet and snow, here’s a few favourites from around the college - by Madeleine Lynch.

So it’s winter time again and the coat that you bought last year is seriously outdated and you need a new one. The variation of coats that I’ve seen around college is great and there are so many different styles. Despite this there are some that have stood out to me as being rather popular. Firstly is the New Look Textured Single Button Boyfriend Coat (that’s a mouthful) [pictured on the left]. This coat and others similar to it are popular this winter, especially the boyfriend style and the deep burgundy colouring. It’s in New Look for a decent price of £39.99.

Next is the H&M Grey Fake Fur Coat [pictured in the center]. Fur coats have obviously been popular this year, I myself have looked for one but it’s hard to choose. H&M have provided this for only £29.99 and it’s good quality! Soft and fluffy, as a fur coat should be to keep you warm and it looks beautiful as well. The best thing about fur coats is that they have a classy look about them.

Last on my list is the Topshop Slouchy Mohair Dark Green Boyfriend Coat [pictured on the right], which has been extremely popular as me and many other girls around college have purchased this. It’s has a lovely boyfriend style and it’s great at keeping you warm but I would recommend wearing a scarf alongside this. This coat is a bit more expensive at £89.00 but is definitely the best quality out of the three.

Starbucks– costing your wallet and your waistline

Emily Beard takes a look at popular coffee shops and how much they are really costing us.

As the weather is getting colder and colder and you make your weekly treks to Starbucks in your frees, perhaps you should reconsider?

The world is being dominated by coffee shops like Caffè Nero, Costa Coffee and Starbucks– the latter having almost 21,000 stores worldwide! Some places in particular take coffee drinking to the extreme as proven in Santa Fe, California which has the highest concentration of Starbucks’ with an outrageous 560 within a 25 mile radius.

Whether it’s the thrill of tricking the baristas with a fake name, or the feeling of being on the set of Friends in a Central Perk-esque coffee shop that tempts you, what is your daily caffeine fix actually costing? The average drink at Starbucks is around £2, which may seem like a steal for somebody that has one every now and then, but you daily junkies could be spending around £730 a year! And your bank account is not the only thing suffering. A tall gingerbread latte is around 300 calories– the same as a cheeseburger from McDonald’s!

If your withdrawal symptoms are too strong to ignore and cutting back seems out of the question, perhaps consider a cheaper alternative? A flask from Costa is £3. Making your own drink everyday and bringing it to college with you would save you hundreds!

But, with over 35 million likes on Facebook, it doesn't look like the loyal fan base of Starbucks will be decreasing any time soon.

Deck the Halls

At Christmas time we all notice the divide between the Scrooges and the fanatics, but we all need a break from the stress of dashing about, whether it’s just for a coffee or to catch a movie. By Richard Burrows.

Tis the season to be jolly, and there’s plenty of events that will get you  into the Christmas spirit!

Who could forget the massive Christmas  market on the High Street last year that brought together a crowd of over 12,000 people? What better way to sort out your gifts to loved ones than with a festive shopping trip with hot drinks and food available all day? The 8th of December is the day to do your Christmas shopping, so don’t miss it!

On the Silver Screen

Christmas time is always a competitive period of the year for film producers, each trying to grab that  number 1 position, and this year we’re sure to not be disappointed. The second Hobbit  movie: ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ (release date: 13th) as well as the highly anticipated sequel to the hilarious Anchorman (20th) are likely to be two major competitors for the top spot.

Sleeping Beauty

We all love a bit of a lay-in, but this damsel-in-distress is overdoing it a bit in this month’s featured pantomime at the Mercury Theatre. The  famous children’s fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty with a few of the Theatre company’s little touches will be showing from the 6th of December until the 11th of January. With brilliant comedy suitable for guys and girls of all ages, and fantastically hilarious music to accompany the happily-ever-after adventure  story, this play is a great, feel-good festive treat!

Girl Guiding Big Gig 2013

Guides from all over the UK converged on Wembley Arena for the Girl Guiding UK Big Gig 2013 - By Hannah Brown.

On the 12th October I went to the Big Gig 2013 concert at Wembley Arena. Big Gig is organised by Girl Guiding UK. It has been running for 10 years and is an exclusive concert for members of the guiding movement aged 10 and over. The concert was presented by Ceallach Spellman and Richard Wisker, stars of CBBC’s Friday Download.

My view of the stage at the concert.
The audience went wild for the 9 acts , Dionne Bromfield, Charlie Brown, Overload, Little Mix, Katy B, Union J, Jahmene Douglas, Conor Maynard and 5 Angels.

I went to the concert with my local Guide group, where I volunteer as a young leader. This was the first concert I have ever been to, and I really enjoyed it and found it an amazing experience.

For more information about Girl Guiding UK, visit their website at: www.girlguiding.org.uk

Keep calm and don’t be so catty

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock. Let’s embrace the season of peace and goodwill and be a bit less catty.

Cattiness is getting a problem. According to the urban dictionary, (queue posh Queen voice) “if one is being catty, they are being subtly or indirectly insulting. Different from bitchy in that bitchiness is just mean, while cattiness is often clever and witty.”

Although its not a major problem, it’s something that grates on me. And can I add that it is a very female thing. To be honest it doesn’t do us gals any favours. It’s not like we’re at disadvantage already or anything!

It might not be a surprise when I say that Mean Girls is my favourite film, and the moral of that film kind of inspired me to write this. Tina Fey’s hilarious portrayal of how high school cliques have negative impacts on people has hopefully inspired a few people to be a bit nicer and more accepting of others.
“They encourage us to slag off other females as if it’s what we’re born to do.”
But although practically every girl between the ages of 13 to 30 have watched it, (and the occasional guy) there are still people who have seen it that choose to ignore this message.

Particularly through more passive cattiness.  We all know that look a female will shoot another, when perhaps they feel slightly threatened by their looks. Or when another female looks at you up and down as if to say “what are you doing here?” Trust me, it happens a lot. Why do we do it? Unfortunately I think it’s to do with the way we are bombarded with criticisms of females from the media. *Sigh* Yes, this age old problem that everyone moans about.

I think it’s largely due to magazines; they encourage us to slag off other females as if it’s what we we’re born to do. And perhaps it is- it’s natural to feel intimidated by someone who you think’s prettier than you. Just maybe compliment them rather than give them the look. All you need is love guys.

Lawson

The Lawson lads celebrating their debut album going gold

Pop rock band Lawson are reassured that all their hard work is finally paying off. By Kayleigh Peters.

Andy Brown (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Ryan Fletcher (backing vocals, bass guitar), Joel Peat (backing vocals, lead guitar) and Adam Pitts (drums) have come together from various parts of the country to form the new British, pop rock band known as Lawson. The band were named after neurosurgeon David Lawson, who performed lifesaving surgery on lead singer Andy Brown, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 19 that left him deaf in one ear and almost blind.

After their ground-breaking debut album (Chapman Square) reached number 6 in the UK charts, It’s no surprise that they set their sights on more. They’ve recently been working on their second album Chapman Square / Chapter II—a progression of Chapman Square—with new material including acoustic recordings of our favourites including crowd pleaser Taking Over Me, which literally has taken over me.

Their newest single Juliet (debuting at No. 3) is definitely one of my favourites. The sound of the lead guitar gave the song the edgy pop rock feel and is bound to get  you up on your feet or brighten up your boring journey when you catch yourself singing.

Since seeing them live I would  definitely recommend going to see them, as the atmosphere at their concerts is just incredible with them even jumping into the crowd, and who doesn’t like watching four hot guys rock out?!

Who knows what the future holds for these guys? All I know is that it’s certainly looking bright, so watch out!

Hello Tartan!

Harriet Stevenson evaluates this vastly popular fashion trend.

Tartan is absolutely EVERYWHERE: scarves, shirts, leggings, skirts, trousers, dresses, coats, bags and even shoes. Where will this fashion trend end?

Not that I’m complaining; I love tartan, it’s such a fun and versatile pattern – you can mix it in with any outfit and it works. It’s also good for all ages: I recently went to London and on the tube almost everyone who had a scarf had one that was tartan – myself included. An old man with a farmer-style cap – he had a tartan scarf like mine, but it worked, as tartan is a pattern that’s been around for generations.

I think you can overdo the tartan though, just like people can overdo leather and denim. I saw a guy the other day with a denim shirt, denim jacket and jeans (all the same shade of denim); to be honest he might as well have been wearing a denim onesie. But who am I to judge?! I sometimes, by accident, find myself wearing triple denim too (why did I ever think a denim backpack was a good idea?)

However, all that’s by the by as tartan can be worn for both formal occasions and casual. It also lends itself to any style, whether it is grungy or preppy; this means that tartan stays unique – something that is very important in a fashion trend. The minute a design gets overworked, it loses its value.

That’s why I would say for the most part you can’t really go wrong with tartan, there are so many different variations of the pattern: small checks, large checks, monochrome or traditional. The world really is your oyster when it comes to tartan! The only thing I wouldn’t suggest is multiple tartan in one outfit - you can overdo a good thing!

Popular New York fashion blogger Lua P stated “There’s never enough plaid in my wardrobe.” If I’m honest I really can’t help but to agree as it just adds that extra pop to an outfit.

So I welcome the arrival of tartan and am excited to buy more tartan items and have fun styling them, though I promise to stay well clear of triple tartan! That’s a mistake I’m sure would not go down well.

Introducing: Standing Tall

All you need to know about Norwich lads Standing Tall, brought to you by East Anglia's music rep Lucy Neill.

Alt-rock foursome Standing Tall have been making a name for themselves this past year, with the release of their new EP 'Still Breathing'. Hailing from Norwich, the band is made up of vocalist and guitarist Blake Marchesi, bassist Tom Bircham, guitarist Holen Wong (sorry, former guitarist - Holen unfortunately left the band in early October, but I wanted to include him anyway) and drummer Dan Bowley.
Since their formation in November 2010, Standing Tall recorded their debut EP 'Life.Obsession.Violence.Emotion' which was released in May 2012 (available for free here - http://goo.gl/6YfC3), and were back in the studio in early 2013 with their new material, released in the form of a five-track EP entitled 'Still Breathing' in July 2013, for which they also released a music video for, and had support from other homegrown heroes Fenrir and Searching Alaska for their EP release gig. With influences such as Deftones, Foo Fighters and Alexisonfire, this band's unique sound is hitting the local music scene and has been receiving brilliant feedback. I had a catch-up with the guys just before their EP release back in July, here are some of the things we talked about:

How is 'Still Breathing' different from your debut EP, and how have you guys as a band changed since then?
It’s a lot better than the first release. Musically we have matured a lot since the writing the first EP. We also lost a member Josh a couple of months after recording the EP as a live unit. It has changed us a lot, but for the better, now everyone is on an instrument we seem a lot more in tune with each other playing shows.

What about your experiences in the studio when recording 'Still Breathing' back in January?
Oh the experience was so good, we recorded the EP with Dan Lancaster who has worked with some of our favourite bands and he was just brilliant, a little strange but brilliant. Dan is a cracking musician as well and as a singer he is so bloody good so for Blake to be able to work with him and get some tips was even better.  We recorded our first EP at a friend’s studio just as he was starting up so this was a bit of a step up for us and there was no beating around the bush with Dan if you played something and it wasn’t good enough it went in the bin and you did it again and the EP sounds better for it.

Describe your new E.P in 5 words!
Punchy, dynamic, catchy, melodic and sexual.

Homegrown Heroes: Albums and EPs

Once again, Lucy Neill brings us the latest from the hottest new acts in East Anglia and talks about album and EP releases from these promising, young bands.
Polar Collective
Polar Collective
Polar Collective are a four-piece from Ipswich, Suffolk, with an unusual mix of sounds, including acoustic pop, hip-hop and indie. The band are made up of vocalist Jacob Cardy, guitarist Adam Dodd, saxophonist Ally Newbigging and drummer Gryphon Ford, who formed the band when in college back in November 2011. They've played all over the country and have even supporting Killamonjumbo, who have supported Ed Sheeran on numerous occasions. They released their debut EP, 'Snakes and Ladders' in September 2012 and have built up a strong fanbase since. They've also released a music video for their song 'All This Hype' and have several acoustic covers on YouTube, including Bastille and Taylor Swift, and the band are currently working on some new material. They're lovely guys with a joyful sound, guaranteed to make you want to jump around.

Fenrir
Next up are Fenrir, an alt-rock quintet from Haverhill in Suffolk, consisting of vocalist Ben Slater, guitarists Mike Cockayne and Krishan Alwis, bassist Rich Wallis and drummer Ben Brennan. Forming in late 2011, they released their EP 'Live Like Royalty' in September last year and then made a music video for their single 'Confessions' in March 2013. They toured with fellow MTA Artist Management band Searching Alaska from March through April earlier this year too. The band are currently working on their new song 'Ruins' and hope to release it soon.

The Aurora
6-piece band The Aurora are taking East-Anglia by storm. Hailing from Suffolk, the progressive rock/electronica band were formed in late 2011 with Eliott McCall on vocals and guitar, Oscar Charlton and Joe Mamo on guitars, Michael Whittle on bass, Benji Sadler on synth and electronics and Toby Houghton on drums. In December 2012, they released their EP 'Origami Tsunami' which received great feedback from their fans. They have played at the O2 Islington Academy on multiple occasions, and recently supported punk giants Wheatus when they played at the Ipswich Railway Venue. They play, in their words, "huge melodic riffs with tasty breakdowns and cheeky hook-lines with a big electro/dance input". They smashed Ipswich on the 6th and 7th of July earlier this year at Ipstock and Ipswich Music Day - I think it's safe to say these local champions are going to go far in the music industry indeed.

Maglia Rosa Group
Norfolk-based quartet Maglia Rosa Group are made up of Daisy Lawrence on vocals, guitar, organ and flute, Sam Lawrence on guitar, synth and vocals, Matt on bass and Owen on drums. They have a unique indie-pop sound, and during my interview with them, Matt said "when I first joined the band, it was straight-forward pop, but Daisy's sort of dramatic vocal delivery and the music went like that too, so like pop but a bit more dramatised dark as well." Forming back in April 2011, they released their debut EP 'Nighthawks' in December 2012, managing to sell out their release gig, and have a music video for the track 'Nighthawks' from the EP.

Phoenix Calling
Last but not least comes Phoenix Calling, a five-piece rock band from Cambridge, consisting of Steven Chapman, Dominic Greenwood, Martyn Hilliam, Benedict Greenwood and Jason Howard. Formed in July 2012, these lads are currently writing and recording their debut EP 'Waves', and have already released a music video for their single 'Bring the Roof Down', already planning another music video for their yet-to-be-released single 'Everybody Knows'. The band have shared the stage with the likes of The First, We Are Fiction, Tu Amore, Fights & Fires and more, and have also headlined the main stage at Willow Festival 2013 and played the BBC Introducing Stage at Cambridge Rock Festival.

Be In Style: Appreciate Moustaches This Movember

Growing Moustaches is our business. Business is good! Join the Movember movement this year or read about it below  with Holly Hume.

Not November—Movember. Every year when the sky clouds over and we begin the challenge of protecting ourselves from the annual downpours which accompany British autumn, men all around the world are undertaking a challenge of their own.
The charity is run by a board of directors who use the proceeds from Movember to fund programmes which further men’s health such as; Awareness and Education, Living with and beyond cancer, and research.
Their effort last year raised an incredible £92.0 million GBP and there are now 1.1 million  registered “Mo’s” worldwide. There were also 2.7 million conversations generated by Movember, not surprising given the publicity its gained since it took off in  Australia 2003.
So, take Movember to the streets this autumn by reading the rules below.

THE RULES:
1) Once registered at Movember.com each Bro must begin Movember with a clean shaven face.
2) For the entire month of Movember each “Mo Bro” must grow and
groom a moustache.
3) There is to be no joining of the Mo to your sideburns. That’s considered a beard.
4) There is to be no joining of the handlebars to your chin. This is to be considered a goatee.
5) Each “Mo Bro” must conduct himself like a true gentlemen.

The rule list ends with a small caption, “IF YOU DON’T LIKE OUR MOUSTACHES, WE DON’T LIKE YOUR LAWS”.

Movember has morphed into a worldwide phenomenon in just ten years. The website boasts a “Mo Community” which includes a Hall of Fame and the “Moscars”. From a small charity targeting men, its moved on to encompass “Mo Sistas” too. The Mo Sistas can assist with the charity work by promoting Movember and helping the Mo’s along the way.

The Mo Sistas are vital to the growth of Movember; supporting their men in the daunting task of the facial hair face off, offering winks and smiles to many a man who is unsure of his Mo.
The charity, additionally to their rules, have a set of values by which they run the organisation, some of which are below.

Fun: We create fun.

Accountable: We are accountable and transparent. We strive to exceed best practice cost-to-fundraising ratios.

Remarkable Experiences: At every touch point; phone, email, events, online and in person we endeavour to create a remarkable experience

Change Agent: We stand for constructive change. We challenge the norm in all our activities and as a result we drive significant outcomes from the
conversations we create and funds we raise.

Innovative: Born from an entrepreneurial spirit, we
apply innovation across the organisation, improve efficiency.

So dig out the precision razor and wax in preparation for the biggest month this year. Ladies too.

Celebrity Style Steals

Love your favourite celebrities? Love their styles? Here’s where you can duplicate their outfits at a more relatable price. By Madeleine Lynch.
Cara Delevingne, British fashion model, occasional actress and current face of Burberry, has recently transformed into a big celebrity; you’re seeing her everywhere. She’s even been called the “star face” of this Autumn/Winter season by British Vogue.

Cara was seen wearing this outfit in London on August 20th. Now her Vivienne Westwood pants, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and Yliana Yepez bag are probably just out of the price range for this article, so we’ve found some similar dupes to replicate her individual style. You can find most of these things right here in Colchester or see the links to the websites of each item.

Item no. 1 is Cara’s cardigan, it was hard to find something exactly like this so we’ve gone with a simple black blazer instead. You can find this in H&M for £29.99.

Item no. 2 is just a simple grey vest, this obviously isn’t hard to duplicate and you can find one of these anywhere, but we’ve found one anyway from H&M for only £5.99.

Next is item no. 3, Cara’s gorgeous Vivienne Westwood tartan trousers, it was hard to replicate these exactly, so instead we’ve gone with some red tartan leggings from Topshop for £25.

Item no. 4 is the shoes. Now I’m sure any pair of black boots would go well with this outfit but I’ve chosen to keep it simple with a pair of platform sneakers from again, H&M for £14.99.

Lastly is the accessories. Cara’s kept this simple with only a beanie and some aviators. These are pretty easy to find anywhere at the moment but we’ve gone for the black ribbed beanie from New Look for only £4.99 and a pair of very similar aviators from warehouse for £10.

Recipe: Cinnamon Nutella cake!

This all-in-one cake is perfect for all Nutella lovers everywhere and is really simple and relatively quick to make (if you don’t include the cooking time!). However, no cake is perfect and there is always room for improvement, hence the 3 ½ stars out of 5!

The cake itself was a bit dense (which may be due to a little too long in the oven) but this didn’t stop us devouring more than two slices each! Next time I would check the cake after 40 minutes so as to ensure it had the perfect cooking time and isn’t left in that 5 minutes too long because in the end, every oven is different. The actual making of the cake was extremely straight forward, putting everything into the bowl at once saves a lot of time (as well as a lot on washing up!) so this added to the solid 3 ½ star rating we gave overall.

If you aren’t keen on cinnamon you could always substitute it for a teaspoon of vanilla extract/essence for the flavouring as this will no doubt be a great combo!

Ingredients
175g softened butter or hard marg softened (more economical)
175g golden caster sugar
3 eggs
200g self-raising flour
1tsp baking powder
2tsp ground cinnamon
4tbsp milk
4 rounded (or heaped for true lovers) of Nutella/own brand hazelnut spread
50g hazelnuts, roughly chopped

Method
1. Set the oven to 180C/gas 4/fan 160C. Butter/line a tin – I used a loose bottomed cake time about 10cm high or instead you could use a loaf shaped tin
2. Put all ingredients into a bowl (NOT the Nutella or chopped hazelnuts) and whisk until light and fluffy
3. Tip ¾ of the mixture into the tin and even out. Then spoon the Nutella on. I spread it out but it sank to the bottom whilst cooking – better to add it in small blobs.
4. Add the rest of the mixture to cover the Nutella. Sprinkle with the hazelnuts and put in the oven for about 1 hour (Good idea to check before the hour is up to make sure it isn’t burning!!) or until risen, brown and firm to touch.

What could be simpler? All that is left to do is pour a cup of tea or a glass of milk and it’s good to go!
Note: The Nutella can sink to the bottom whilst cooking but don’t worry, it still tastes good! Just make sure it’s added in small lumps so as not to be too heavy on the mixture.

Music Review: Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!

A review of Panic! At The Disco’s newest album by Emily Beard

The fourth album from America’s alternative rock band Panic! At The Disco was released on the 8th October and it was worth the wait.

It seemed impossible to me that anything could beat their 2005 debut album ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’ but Brendon Urie, Dallon Weekes and Spencer Smith are musical geniuses and although it is very hard to compare all 4 of their albums, this one certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Whilst some of their other material has brilliant, deep lyrics this album stays true to the bands Las Vegas roots. It has a heavier dance feel than we’ve previously seen and extensive use of synthesisers.  Think less emotional and more Vegas dance party- a theatrical, entertaining and care free listen.

Track Listing:
1. This Is Gospel
2. Miss Jackson (featuring Lolo)
3. Vegas Lights
4. Girl That You Love
5. Nicotine
6. Girls/Girls/Boys
7. Casual Affair
8. Far Too Young To Die
9. Collar Full
10. The End of All Things

Having already released Miss Jackson and This Is Gospel, their sound has definitely evolved.  The latter being the opening track and one that is worthy of being belted out in the shower. Yes, I am guilty of doing this. These first two songs set very high standards for the rest of the album and although none of the others quite match these, I am certainly not disappointed.

With songs like Vegas Lights and Girls/Girls/Boys having an electronic, futuristic feel they are slightly over repetitive and less memorable than some others. They don’t prove Panic! At The Disco’s incredible song writing skills quite like their first album did. However, every time the band starts to falter they manage to pick themselves back up, this time in the form of the song Nicotine, an addictive injection of excitement which once again displays the amazing vocals of the lead singer and makes you overlook the slightly flawed songs. The few average songs in the middle of the album are completely forgotten about with the killers at the beginning and end.

Although it is perhaps a little less than what I was hoping for, it is still one to be enjoyed turned up on full volume with plenty of room to dance.  Fans of Fall Out Boy will undoubtedly enjoy this album as it sounds similar, without being identical, to their latest sound.

Favourite track on the album: This Is Gospel
Rating: 4/5
Available on amazon.co.uk and iTunes

Music Review: All Time Low

Harriet Stevenson discusses the exciting new single and songs from pop-punk band All Time Low.

All Time Low have been on the scene for just over 10 years and have never failed to impress their fans, bringing out new music often and always to an outstanding standard. Their new single ‘A Love Like War’ with lead singer Vic Fuentes from Pierce The Veil is no exception. With the powerful drumming and exciting guitar rifts this song sets it’s self up with an angsty tone.

Vic Fuentes’ voice lends itself perfectly to Alex Gaskarth’s providing a wonderful variation in tones throughout the song. ‘A Love Like War’ ‘s fast pace and punchy rhythm makes it a song that gets your heart beat racing and leaves you ready to do anything (even that coursework you’ve been putting off!).

Now onto the re-release of ‘Don’t panic’ creatively called ‘Don’t Panic: It’s Longer Now!’,  but we can forgive the name, due to the 3 acoustic songs being absolute paradise. Especially the use of violins in ‘Somewhere in Neverland’, which complements beautifully the slightly husky voice of lead singer Alex Gaskarth.

The new songs on this best selling album are: ‘Me Without You (All I Ever Wanted)’ ‘Canals’ ‘Oh, Calamity!’ and of course, ‘A Love Like War’.

All these new songs are wonderfully inventive and dynamic, something All Time Low has become known for over the past few years. ‘Me Without You (All I Ever Wanted)’ starts with a catchy set of la‘s and da’s which will get you singing along right away!

However my personal favourite is “Oh, Calamity!”. It starts off with a lilting melody of clever image provoking lyrics – “When I was younger I was certain, That I’d be fine without a queen, Just a king inside his castle,  With an ocean in between, Now all I do is sit and count the miles from you to me, Oh, calamity ” which then crescendos into a vibrantly soulful chorus.  Also you can’t forget the amazing guitar rift in there, showing that All Time Low is a band with 4 extremely talented musicians.

So if you haven’t already given ‘Don’t Panic: It’s Longer Now!’ a listen I suggest you do, as it really will be ‘music to your ears’, and I for one can’t stop listening to it!

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary

The Doctor returns for the 50th anniversary, but will it live up to fans expectations? WARNING contains spoilers! By Hannah Brown

On November the 23rd 1963, William Hartnell and Carol Ann Ford stepped onto television screens for the first time as the Doctor and his granddaughter, now 50 years  and 1 revival later The Doctor is back to celebrate his 50 years with a special 50th anniversary episode “The Day Of The Doctor”.

Since the BBC announced there would be a special 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, expectations and excitement have been running high, but will it live up to the expectations of Doctor Who fans everywhere?

Currently little is known about what will be happening in the episode, however the BBC have announced some of the people who will be appearing in the episode. David Tennant and Billie Piper will be returning as the 10th Doctor and Rose Tyler to accompany Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman as the 11th Doctor and Clara Oswald (Impossible Girl).

The monsters who will be returning are the Zygons, who haven’t appeared in Doctor Who since its revival, and the Daleks. Steven Moffat (executive producer) commented “The Doctor once said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, so it’s fitting that for this very special episode, he should be facing the greatest enemies of all.”

Excitement has also been brewing after the final episode of the last series, where John Hurt has been introduced as The Doctor. No one knows what this part of The Doctor did and why it “wasn’t in the name of The Doctor,” but fans hope that answers will be given on the 23rd November.

Not only is there  the 50th anniversary episode to be excited about, but there is also the Christmas episode where The Doctor will regenerate.

Fans will be sad to see Matt go, but there are mixed feelings towards the new Doctor. Some are optimistic, whereas others are still hung up over David.
When asked how it feels to have been given the part of 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi (pictured above) said “Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight.”

There is a lot of curiosity over how Peter will interpret the part, but fans are just going to have to wait and see, while enjoying the excitement ahead.

Why we can do anything we want if we say “we can”

Forget Westlife’s infamous “flying without wings”, it’s all about Jessica Cox flying without arms and why it inspires Freya Turner

We all have days where we tell ourselves we can’t do things. 25 year old Jessica Cox is an example of someone who goes literally above and beyond the word ‘can’t’. (You’ll get the reference in a bit)! Born without arms, she drives a car, plays the piano, has two black belts in Tae Kwon-Do, and oh yeah, flies planes. She is in fact the first woman in history to fly with her feet. How? One foot is on the controls, while the other is gently controlling the steering column. Not only can she master flying, she excels at it. Her flying instructor says how some pilots come nowhere close to her ability.

This really enlightened me. Although you may naturally feel disadvantaged to do as well as someone else, it is likely you will actually do better than them. Perhaps we should all stop worrying about what other people are doing. It is more than likely that that dreaded essay everybody else seems to have under control may in fact give you an A and your classmates a D!

Jessica believes that “through creativity and recognizing there is more than one way to do something... I figured it would be best to buckle the seatbelt first before sitting down.” It is unsurprising that Jessica is now known around the world as an inspirational speaker.

Although it may sound clichĂ©d, I’m going to try to take a leaf out of Jessica’s book and try to tell myself I “can” on “can’t” days.

Must See Films of the Month

Whether you’re a pansy looking for a quiet night in, or a fright night fanatic ready to sink your teeth into a gory horror this Halloween, we have a film to make you weep or screech.

For the pansies: ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’

Now I know I’m a little behind on this, but this film really is a must see.  All about a troubled freshman named ‘Charlie’ who has just joined an American High School, this tale follows a group of introverts who come together through their oddities and embrace the new schoolboy into their friendship group.
This film is perfect for anyone interested in the 80s scene, with plenty of music references, including Bowie and Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

What I personally  love about this film, is the twist it withholds until the very end which I found both unpredictable and original, something which appears hard to convey these days.

Filled with laughter, good music, men dressed in suspenders and a heart-breaking narration, ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ will keep you glued to your seat until the credits. Brilliant actors, brilliant storyline, brilliant film.

For the people who enjoy a good horror film at Halloween: ‘Alien’

Why is Alien the classic horror you need to watch this  Halloween? Well for starters if you have not seen a Ridley Scott film you are in for a treat, as this classic is not one to be missed. The film stars Sigourney Weaver as the titular character of Ripley who  embarks on a journey (along with other crew members) to help  a nearby planet after they send out a help. signal to the Nostramus (groups ship) them to help. This film is one you must watch for so many reasons.

They become embroiled in a story which pits them against new creatures that they never thought existed, which is what makes this film so enjoyable. This classic horror is a must see for anyone, especially with Halloween fast approaching. So why not kick back, relax and watch Alien this half term.

Film Review: Colfer strikes his way onto cinema screens

Prepare to be Struck by Lightning with Chris Colfer’s debut film. By Kayleigh Peters

Striking his way into the film world, young actor Chris Colfer is definitely one to watch out for. Making his debut into the world of fame through the musical comedy Glee, Colfer has decided to try his hand on the other side of the camera with screen writing with the teen comedy Struck by Lightning.

This electrifying film follows the life of  high school reject Carson Phillips, played by Colfer, who’s in his senior year and trying to get into the College of his Dreams, Northwestern University, where he hopes to graduate and become a bestselling New York Times author. However, escaping the town he grew up in and learned to hate along the way is proving much harder than he first thought.

In an attempt to achieve his dreams, Carson decides that writing a literary magazine is the only way to do this. This doesn’t go down too well with his with his shallow peers. So Carson brings out his true mischievous side, and blackmails half the school in order to get entries for his magazine along with his sidekick, Malerie Baggs (Rebel Wilson, the star of Pitch Perfect).

Carson’s home life isn’t running smoothly either. Living with his divorced, jobless, forever drunken and drugged up mother (Allison Janney), who walks the town in her pyjamas and steals from shops isn’t a stroll in the park. Aren’t parents supposed to be responsible and watch over their children, or is it the other way around? Just as things are starting to look up for Carson, Dad (Dermot Mulroney), decides now is the time to take an interest in his life, after years of neglecting his son. Then to top it all off, we follow Carson’s heart-clenching relationship with his Alzheimer’s ridden Grandma. The only person that ever supported him in his dreams, his number one fan, can’t even remember who he is thanks to the memory stealing disease.

After hearing that comedic genius, Rebel Wilson (Malerie Baggs), and sweetheart Polly Bergen (Grandma) were cast, I knew straight from the off this film would be the perfect balance of witty, teen comedy and unbearable heartbreak, both bringing tears to my eyes for opposite reasons. They turned what was sure to be ‘just another film’ that explores teen problems into something truly inspirational to anyone who watches it.

This fast-moving film won’t fail to impress with its whimsical one liners. It’s the perfect tribute to all us struggling and stressed college students. For Colfer’s first film, it’s safe to say there’s a future here for him, unless extremely rare natural disasters are anything to go by. Even though there are improvements to be made, I’m sure they’ll be ironed out as he gains experience in this field, so it’s definitely worth keeping your eyes peeled for him in the near future.

Director: Brian Donnelly
Screen writer: Chris Colfer
Running time: 90 minutes
Released: 11/01/13

Review: ‘Moiranex’ EP by Sleepless Wild

Lucy Neill reviews the EP ‘Moiranex’ by Sleepless Wild— a Suffolk-based quintet with hip-hop and alt-rock sounds fresh on the scene in July.

Sleepless Wild are an Ipswich based five-piece, founded in April, who have a unique blend of hip-hop, rock and alternative music, all fused together with vocalist Lewis Clarke, guitarists and vocalists Fagan Alexander and Ade Parkinson, bassist Josh Lee and drummer Rayna Vandèl.

The 6-track EP includes the songs Cut Scene Conversations, Stay, Benny Was Cold, Jackie Jones, Stay (Part 2) and This Hype. The first song on the EP, 'Cut Scene Conversations', starts off diving into the rock side of their sound before hitting into the frontman's smooth rhymes, while still keeping the alternative element. The catchy riffs leading to the melodic vocals from Fagan and Ade really tied the song together. Lewis' upbeat lyrics mixed with the alt-rock from the rest of the instruments is something you don't hear often; it's such a exceptional tangle of talent, two genres working perfectly with each other. It's no wonder Sleepless Wild have already had such great feedback on their sound. 'Cut Scene Conversations' ended with a slower, slightly reggae-ragga-ish-but-not-quite tune with the more melodic vocals, a good choice in the first track to introduce the rest of the EP.

'Stay', the second song on Moiranex, is slowed down a lot in comparison to Cut Scene Conversations. A more relaxing track, and a shorter one too. Both Lewis' vocals and the melodic vocals weave together with the rhythmic 'jazz-funk' guitar parts and flirtatious lyrics. There are so many different parts to this song, different instruments and vocals working in the background to make 'Stay' the great track that it is.

'Benny Was Cold' comes next. Unlike the first two, the feel of this track is darker with different emotions projected through the lyrics. Not only that, but there's a whole story in this song, of violence and family and betrayal, while also having the balance of the different vocals and guitar work, playing with different tempos and vibes. The constant guitar melody in the background is almost haunting in reflection of the lyrics.

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to 'Jackie Jones' is the two different vocal styles mixed in with Jack Johnson, merged with Arctic Monkeys, and some Santana-esque tones on the guitar. It's an interesting and a confusing crossover - in a good way, mind. The song gives off mellow vibes, and it surprised me how the hip-hop essence could be shown really well with the relaxed soft-rock sound.

The fifth song, 'Stay (Part 2)', has the same theme to it as the second song on the EP, but has more playful guitar parts and is a little bit more upbeat, and focuses more on the melodic vocals in the chorus'. This song has a hip-hop base, with bit of indie-rock in the middle and the smooth vocals layered on top to give it flavour. While Lewis' lyrics are just as libidinous and flirty as they were in 'Stay', the lyrics from Fagan and Ade are more amorous, but at the same time, not head-over-heels kind of lyrics.

Concluding the EP is 'This Hype' - returning to the alternative-rock that came with 'Cut Scene Conversations', this song is loud and boastful and fierce. With big rhymes and catchy guitar riffs, this is the heaviest song on the EP. Also, there are no melodic vocals on this track, and that with the exuberant sound from the guitars, bass and drums, show that Sleepless Wild want the last song on the EP to go out with a bang.

It's safe to say that Sleepless Wild have certainly made an amazing first impression on the local music scene, especially for a band who only formed in April. They have such a sophisticated blend of sounds that's shown so brilliantly through Moiranex, something that I've never come across before and will surely take the music industry by storm. If all this sounds like a band in search of a style, you'd be wrong, as they're not searching for a music style that suits them, but have actually found and developed one that is such an interesting crossover of styles, and I think with just a little more production, this rather unique combination could be very big indeed.

FALL INTO AUTUMN ○ TRENDS

1. Topshop 2. New Look 3. River Island 4. Cambridge Satchel 5. New Look

Tartan is the perfect print for the Autumn time with it’s darker shades and geometric print. Wear  preppy when paired with a structured blazer, oxfords and chinos or give it a more 90’s grunge edge if you wear the trend with some studded leather and distressed denim. Tartan is one of the most versatile prints of the moment and is something everyone can translate into their personal style.

SHOP THE PICKS

1. is this oversized tartan print tee from Topshop— wear a black long sleeved top underneath for the winter months or with some highwaisted jeans for  the fall.
2. Next up is this plaid shirt -an easy way to work the trend without anything to over the top: Purchase from New Look.
3. Velvet: Another huge Autumn trend and this River Island dress has the perfect mix of the two. The skater style of the dress is classic and the print gives a more contemporary vibe.
4. Tartan can also translate into accessories; the subtle touch of print on this satchel is so unique and unusual. Purchase from the Cambridge Satchel Company.
5. My final pick is this tartan scarf which has a mixture of both paisley and check: scarfs are a must in the Autumn and this  one from New Look is essential.

Tartan is overall a really converted trend this Autumn/Winter, after getting spotted on the catwalks in London Fashion Week. Definitely one to test out when you are looking for something unusual for the cooler months.

Introducing: Searching Alaska

Grapevine Live writer Lucy Neill introduces Searching Alaska—an Essex-based quartet who are soaring to success after just fifteen months

Searching Alaska are a four-piece from Grays, Essex, formed by vocalist Christina Rotondo, guitarists Jake Ringsell and Toby Campen, and drummer Jamie Abela. Since they began in July 2012, Searching Alaska have released a 5-track EP ‘Summits’ and an acoustic EP, a music video for their song ‘Our Defences’, and did a UK tour with fellow MTA Artist Management band Fenrir back in March. If that wasn’t already enough, they were voted through to the final 15 in Red Bull’s competition and played at Download festival in June!

So what’s their sound like? Hardcore noise with strong, melodic vocals, heavy guitar work mixed in with distinct percussion. If you were to ever see them live, for each song there’s always a strong, passionate performance shown from each of the members – the dedication in the vocals, the finesse in the guitar work, the clarity and timing of the drums – every detail counts, and Searching Alaska definitely tick all the boxes. And on top of all of that, they’re a good-looking bunch, too!

Why should you check them out? Because they’re some of the loveliest people I’ve met, and one of the biggest bands in East Anglia. Their sound is amazing, whether it be the acoustic or the heavier stuff, the band are so talented and I know for a fact that you will like them. (Plus I’m obsessed with their song ‘Puzzles’, so be sure to give that a listen!).

Fall Out Boy Back With A Bang!

Harriet Stevenson discusses the unexpected but fantastic return of Fall Out Boy!

It’s been four long years without Fall Out Boy from when they went on hiatus in late 2009. However it turns out now that nothing was going well within the band, with Pete Wentz getting superstar famous and Patrick Stump’s ego getting the better of him, but what’s past is past and now they’re back with a slightly different sound and “more” mature attitude!

Fall Out Boy announced their return with a BANG on Monday 4th February (making Monday for a majority of pop punk fans more bearable) – a new single, upcoming album and tour dates out for the not so distant future. In fact they played a show in Chicago the very day they announced they were back; needless to say it was a ‘fight to the death’ for the tickets. The same was the case when Fall Out Boy announced they would be playing one show at Camden Underworld in London on February 25th, the tickets were apparently sold out in 9 seconds flat as the venue only held 500 people. However Fall Out Boy showed their appreciation for the fans waiting out in the cold by (as rumour has it) buying them pizza!!

Their song ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark”, which keeps up nicely with their tradition for long song titles, charted at no. five on the UK charts showing that although Fall Out Boy were away their fans never forgot about them! The song itself has a vibe with suggestion in the air that Fall Out Boy are most definitely back with the charm of their old days but with a heavier baseline.

One thing is for sure - I am definitely excited for what is to come and have a warm buzz about me knowing that Fall Out Boy are back for good!

Beauty is an art

Katherine Cudmore looks at controversial photographer Tyler Shields and asks is it art?

In the words of Katy Perry it seems the fun, fresh, fierce aspects of California Girls apply to the men as well, as L.A based photographer and director Tyler Shields is all three.

Kicking it old school by using film and rejecting Photoshop Tyler uses controversial props; raw meat and irons to name but a few, and celebrity subjects such as Linsday Lohan and Emma Roberts to create some truly striking images. Bright red lips, gleaming skin; everyone drips with glamour but Tyler scratches at this Hollywood facade by pairing his beautiful subjects with ugly things such as blood soaked secateurs. But there are more sides to this man than meets the eye. At first glimpse it may look like he’s making the same tired old statements about the falseness of Hollywood. But Shields goes deeper, representing fierce emotions through the use of bold colours and actions stirring feelings within the viewer.

And that truly is the sign of an artist. Someone that makes you not only think but feel as well.
Art is emotion and Tyler captures this perfectly.

April Fools!

April Fool’s day is a widely recognized and celebrated day when people play practical jokes and hoaxes on each other on 1st April.

Many believe that this day of celebration originated from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392) where the vain cock, Chauntecleer, is tricked by a fox. While others believe that it originated because of the change of calendars: In 1582 Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar called the Gregorian calendar (which we still use today). He introduced this because the old calendar, called the Julian calendar, was ahead by 10 days as each year was a little too long. In the old calendar, New Year was celebrated from 25th March to 1st April; but as we know New Year in the current calendar is celebrated on 1st April. In France, people would forget the date of New Year on the Gregorian calendar and still celebrated it on 1st April; for this reason people would play tricks on them and call them “April Fools”.

In many cultures, tradition dictates that the pranking period must end at noon on 1st April, and any jokes attempted after that hour will bring bad luck to the person behind it. In addition, any who fail to respond with a good humour to tricks and jokes are said to attract bad luck themselves. However, any victims of joking are entitled to “turn the tables” after the hour of noon with the retort “April Fool’s gone past... and you’re the biggest fool at last!”

Although April Fool’s day sounds like a day to be cruel to others and trick them into stupidity; it should be noted that not all April Fool superstitions are negative. For example: Males who are fooled by a good-looking female are said to be fated to marry her, or at least enjoy a good friendship with her!

One of the most famous hoaxes was on 1st April, 1957 when the British news show, Panorama, broadcast a three-minute segment about a bumper spaghetti harvest in southern Switzerland. The success of the crop was said to be due to both an unusually mild winter and the "virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil." The audience heard Richard Dimbleby, the show's highly respected presenter, discussing the details of the spaghetti crop as they watched video footage of a Swiss family pulling pasta off spaghetti trees and placing it into baskets. The segment concluded with the assurance that, "For those who love this dish, there's nothing like real, home-grown spaghetti." The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest hoax generated an enormous response. Hundreds of people phoned the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this query the BBC diplomatically replied, "Place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best." To this day the Panorama broadcast remains one of the most famous and popular April Fool's Day hoaxes of all time. It is also believed to be the first time the medium of television was used to stage an April Fool's Day hoax.

Nowadays, April Fool jokes tend to involve persuading someone to do something silly; like look for hen’s teeth, striped paint, a long weight, a left-handed screwdriver or some other non-existent thing!
So remember to keep your wits about you, to avoid being fooled,
and take it as a joke, or it will be no fun at all!

The World's Biggest Fools

April fools day (April 1st) is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. A day where it is acceptable to play juvenile pranks on loved ones and generally make people look silly. Whether you rely on the old standards like “pull my finger” or the classic whoopee cushion, some go to great lengths to come up with elaborate hoaxes to pull on unsuspecting individuals.

Of course Americans are easy targets for these pranks, but the one Taco Bell pulled on 1996 would have fooled many. The American fast food chain announced in six major newspapers that “in effort to help with national debt” they were going to buy one of the country’s most historic treasures- the Liberty Bell. They proclaimed they were going to rename it the “Taco Liberty Bell”. Thousands of infuriated buffoons called up to express their anger. The best line of the day came when a member White House press was asked about the sale. Thinking on his feet, he responded that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold.

During an interview on BBC Radio 2, Patrick Moore (a British astronomer) broadcast that an exceptional astronomical occurrence would take place at exactly 9:47 am. Pluto was to pass directly behind Jupiter, in relation to the Earth resulting in temporarily cancelling out Earth’s own gravity, making people weigh less. Of course it was not true. However the BBC received hundreds of calls from people claiming it had worked! A Dutch woman called up and stated that her husband and she floated around the room together. One man even complained he had risen so suddenly that he hit his head and wanted compensation. What fools!
However my personal favourite prank was when the BBC aired a story about the Swiss spaghetti crop (clearly a fabricated plant), it was presented as a food source that was having a bumper year. The show included footage of Italian citizens picking spaghetti right of the trees!  They encouraged viewers to grow their own spaghetti garden; again the BBC was bombarded with calls from curious viewers wanting to know more about the subject. If only there was such a thing as a spaghetti harvest...

April fool’s day is a perfect opportunity to get some laughs and make people look ridiculous. What if April fool’s day isn’t a special occasion at all and just something someone made up that the whole world has fallen for..?

Top 10 worst chat up lines

Nothing like some cheesy chat up lines for cheesy guys to try and catch a girl’s attention.  Warning: These may have side effects of a broken heart and loneliness. As well as obesity from the comfort eating of valentines chocolates while hugging your cat watching ‘The Notebook.’

1. Was that an earthquake or did you just rock my world?

2. Are you a magnet? Cos I am attracted to you.

3. If I could rearrange the alphabet I would put ‘U’ and ‘I’ together.

4. Did you just fart? Cos you blew me away.

5. You must be tired because you’ve been running through my mind all day.

6. Hey I just realised, you look a lot like my next girlfriend.

7. Apart from being sexy, what do you do for a living?

8. Do you have sunburn, or are you always hot?

9. I’m not a photographer but I can picture us together.

10. Get your coat on. You’ve just pulled.

Sophisticated Statements for Summer

Frances McClean discusses the vital fashion statements for Spring/Summer 2013

Step into Spring and Summer with bold graphics, bold sheen and sophisticated skirts. This year, we are seeing the most iconic statements yet, so prepare yourself to be amazed.

As seen by Marc Jacobs, graphics are making a stand so there is no time for accessories; let the fabric do the talking. With Aztec prints and bold colours, be courageous, gutsy and glamorous.

In contrast, become a sheen queen seen by Christian Dior and Burberry. Bringing out the best in unexpected metallic colours with shine, you are bound to be treated like royalty. For inspiration, go for silvers, gold and metallic pinks, oranges and lilac. Totally unusual, yet incredibly beautiful.

To keep sophistication, pencil skirts are back. Erderm represent sophistication and clashing colours to give a sophisticated and classy look. Bound to give you a sexy silhouette for any shape or size, pencil skirts are definitely a must have this season. Especially with the most dreaded or most exciting day approaching...

That’s right. Once again, it’s nearly the time of the year. Valentines Day.

You find yourself cuddling an empty box of chocolates, not that somebody bought you, but you bought yourself due to sympathy.
So, how will you overcome this?

I think it’s time to get glamorous, whether you are with someone or not. Bead embellished garments, chunky jewellery and  subtle beauty are in. Leave the make-up, it’s time to embrace natural beauty and rather than reds, put on pure creams, pinks and pastels.

Only you are able to make the most of your femininity, so what’s stopping you?

It’s not so bad to be alone…

Harriet Stevenson discusses how spending Valentines Day single won’t be so bad after all!

Okay, so you’re most likely to be counting the days down till Valentines Day, whether it is with excitement to have a special day to express just how much you care for your ‘loved one’, or you’re dreading February 14th – a day which seems to you to be made especially for wallowing in self pity!

However, it doesn’t have to be like that, if you are single this Valentines then who cares? Just make the most out of the day – turn it into a celebration; make it a day to treat yourself. You know, bake some biscuits and a cake; make them as weird and wacky (or a perfectly flawless) as you want!

Afterwards why not put a film or two on, but I wouldn’t put on a ‘lovey dovey’ film because let’s be honest that’s likely to get you down on a day such as this one! So watch a few action films instead, a bit of Batman, Spiderman or James Bond is sure to put you in a good mood or at least distract you for a couple of hours. On the other hand you might prefer to just watch back-to-back episodes of your favorite TV show, to make you laugh!

Whatever you do though, whether you go the day alone or with a few friends make it a day to remember and just have a good time!

Where to go this summer...

The New Year hasn't been here long but already this year we've had freezing temperatures, piles of snow and never ending folders of work to complete. The only thing many of us can think of is booking the next flight away to warm, picturesque locations in tropics. This article will guide your through possible getaway locations for the upcoming summer holidays.

Budget (Less than £400)
Most of us will have a budget of only a few hundred pounds for our holidays this summer and that means we're pretty much confined to Europe, however this should not dampen your spirits. There are plenty of good holidays to be had in Europe, Spain offers warm weather, sandy beaches and cheap accommodation and food, the age limit for purchasing beer there is only 16 which may be another draw. Eastern European nations can be dirt cheap and you should not be deterred because of the lack of publicity these places get. Nations such as The Cheque Republic, Latvia and Romania provide culture, good food and a vibrant and unique nightlife.

Off of the beaten track (£400 - £800)
On the Northern front of the great Sahara desert lies Tunisia, it sits along the Mediterranean, only a few hundred kilometres from mainland Italy it's relatively easy to access by boats from many European nations and regular flights leave from some London airports. Tunisia will provide a unique experience and will open your eyes to a different culture; it will introduce you to the desert and be a truly unique experience. With rich ethnic backgrounds and vibrant scenery, Tunisia will be sure to impress.

Luxury (£800+)
If your parents, by some miracle, have decided to fund your dream holiday, then America is surely the place to go. California is the dream location, with beaches, shopping and a mountain of activities to do, you cannot turn it down. From the diverse cultures of San Francisco, the palm covered boulevards of Los Angeles or the vast forests, beaches and mountains found across the whole state. With Disneyland California and various other parks offering top thrills and sights like the Grand Canyon and Vegas a stone throw away, it's the perfect holiday; but make sure to take your own booze as the drinking age is a staggering 21.

Top 10 Chat Up Lines

Some people have it easy when it comes to  finding that special someone through their dashing looks or their flattering compliments. But for those who aren’t so lucky, here are the top 10 chat up lines that may (or may not) find you a date this Valentines Day.

10.  "You must be Jamaican, because Jamaican me crazy."
“Do you believe in love at first sight.. or should I walk by again?”
8. “Feel my t-shirt.. That’s boyfriend material.”
7. “Do you have a plaster? Because I just scraped my knee falling for you.”
6. “You’re so beautiful that you made me forget my pick-up line.”
5. “You’re like a parking ticket, you have fine written all over you.”
4. “I don’t have a library card, but do you mind if I check you out?”
3. “Hi I’m Doug—God spelled backwards with a little bit of you wrapped in it.”
2. “Touch my arm.. That’s what your future boyfriend feels like.”
1. “How much does a polar bear weigh? I don’t know either, but it broke the ice.”

Cookie Love Hearts

We’ve all had the sweets Love Hearts, but with this recipe you can make the cookie version!

Ingredients
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour, plus more for surface
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 ounces (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Royal Icing
Gel-paste food colouring (such as leaf green, lemon yellow, peach, red, rose, and violet)

Directions
1. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Cream butter and sugar with a mixer on medium speed until pale and fluffy. With mixer running, add egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture gradually, beating until just incorporated. Divide dough in half; flatten each half into a disk, and wrap each in plastic. Refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour (or overnight).
2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees with racks in top third and lower third. Let 1 disk of dough stand at room temperature just until soft enough to roll, about 10 minutes. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out dough to just under 1/4-inch thickness, adding more flour as needed to keep dough from sticking. Cut out cookies with a 2-inch heart cutter, and place them 2 inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Roll out scraps once, and repeat. Repeat with remaining disk of dough. Freeze cookies until very firm, about 15 minutes.
3. Bake cookies, rotating sheets halfway through and switching from top to bottom, until edges turn golden brown, 14 to 16 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks. Cookies will keep, covered, for up to 1 week.
4. Divide royal icing into 1/2-cup portions in small bowls. Tint each with a different gel-paste food colouring, starting with just a drop, mixing well, and adding more, drop by drop, to reach desired shade. Transfer 1 bowl of icing to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/8-inch round plain tip. Pipe the outline around edge of each cookie, then fill in with frosting. Poke air bubbles with a toothpick. Transfer decorated cookies to a parchment-lined baking sheet, and let stand uncovered overnight until dry.
5. Arrange stamp letters to create desired phrases. (We stamped LUV U, UR A QT, BFF, B MINE.) Fold a paper towel into quarters. Squeeze a small amount of red gel-paste food colouring onto a paper towel, and press stamp in colouring. (You may need to blot stamp a few times on a clean paper towel if colouring is too thick.) Lightly press stamp on top of icing in centre of each cookie. Let stand until dry, about 30 minutes. Stamped cookies will keep, covered, for up to 3 days.

Valentine's Day Treats

How to make queen of hearts tarts

INGREDIENTS:

  • 300g all-butter short crust pastry, thawed for 20 minutes,
  • Flour, for dusting.
  • 8-12 tsp strawberry jam

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a 3mm thickness. Use a 7-8cm heart cutter to stamp out 8 hearts, or a 5cm round plain cutter to stamp out 12 circles. Slide a palette knife under the pastry shapes and lower into the heart moulds or bun tin. Gently press the pastry around the edges.
  2. Spoon 2 teaspoons jam into each heart and bake for 12 minutes, until the pastry is pale-golden (or spoon 1 teaspoon into each round tart and bake for 8 minutes). Carefully remove the tarts from the oven - the jam will be very, very hot so don't touch it! Cool for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Once cooled, carefully lift the tarts from the tins using a palette knife. Eat straightaway, or keep in an airtight container in a cool place for up to 2 days.

How to make chocolate truffles

INGREDIENTS:

  • 280g 70% cocoa solids
  • 284ml pot double cream
  • 50g unsalted butter

  1. Chop the chocolate and tip into a large bowl. Put the cream and butter into a saucepan and heat gently until the butter melts and the cream reaches simmering point. Remove from heat, then pour over the chocolate. Stir the chocolate and cream together until you have a smooth mixture. Add any flavourings to the truffle mix at this stage (divide the mixture between bowls and mix in liqueurs or other flavourings, a tsp at a time, to taste. Try bourbon, Grand Marnier, coconut rum or the zest and juice of an orange), or leave plain. Cool and chill for at least 4 hrs.
  2. To shape the truffles, dip a melon baller in hot water and scoop up balls of the mixture, then drop the truffles onto greaseproof paper. Or lightly coat your hands in flavourless oil (such as sunflower) and roll the truffles between your palms. You could also use a piping bag to pipe rounds onto greaseproof paper.
  3. Coat your truffles immediately after shaping. Tip toppings into a bowl and gently roll the truffles until evenly coated, then chill on greaseproof paper. Try: crushed, shelled pistachio nuts; lightly toasted desiccated coconut; or roll a truffle flavoured with orange zest and juice in cocoa powder. To coat in chocolate, line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Melt 100g milk, dark or white chocolate for 10 truffles. Allow chocolate to cool slightly. With a fork, pick up one truffle at a time and hold over the bowl of melted chocolate. Spoon the chocolate over the truffle until well-coated. Place on the baking tray, then chill.
  4. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for 3 days, or freeze for up to a month. Defrost in the fridge overnight. To give as presents, place 8-10 truffles in individual foil or paper cases inside small, lined boxes tied with ribbon. Keep in the fridge until you're ready to give them.
